My grandfather just gave me a note for 250 Dinars pictruing Saddam, and he says it is worth nothing since the fall of Saddam's dictatorship. Anyone know anything about it?
Hello & welcome ! If it is an older date it may have some collector value. If it is from the 80's or later it has no value at all unless once again there is a collector out there who wants it I guess. In October of 2003 the CPA in Iraq issued new currency that does not have Saddams face on it & the citizens of Iraq were given a grace period to turn in all the old Swiss dinars for The New IQD. The current value of the New Iraq dinar has hung around an 1470 IQD to 1$ USD . Currently there is no way to exchange them . The values touted by people trying to sell the new Dinar is a self inflated amount set by Saddam himself. At no time was the old dinar valued at $3.22 to $1 USD. As it was never traded on the open market. Sorry for the extra stuff- I just know when you do a search for Dinar the sales of the new stuff is very prevelant & I dont want any one to be fooled.
I have seen several auctions online either in yahoo or ebay with old Saddam dinars. Very very few had any bids on them. I have a stack runign around here in storage I am saving to give to my nieces, grand nepghew and grandkids as a keep sake of where I had been and where my son in law had been that is about all they are worth. With so many peopel either in the service or as a contractor that had been over there, everyone brought a few million dinars back.
It is only collectable is it is UNC, and even then it is worth almost nothing. Otherwsie, it is just a neat souvenir. Fakes are arounbd, but it is VERY diffcult to tell them from the real ones since the real ones were of such poor quality. Earlier notes (not with Saddams pic, though) were angraved notes on good paper - these continued to circulate with real value in Kurdish Iraq up until the war. But, all other Saddam-era notes are poorly made - offset printing on cheap/regular paper. The last Saddam note - 10,000 dinars - was a bit better, with a holographic strip. They were also forged though.
It is no longer legal tender in Iraq, and thus has no intrinsic value, but collectors may want it. It is still pretty common now so you can get them in uncirculated for no more than about $3 or so, at most. If collectors still want them after the supply gets scarce they may go up in value a bit. On another note (no pun inteded, lol)... I have a 10,000 dinar bill that has mismatched serial numbers (the serial number on the left does not match the one on the right); is this a fairly common error? Was printed in 2002.
If you get the 10,000 Dinars with Saddam Hussein on it bearing the dates AH1423/2003,hang on to it,as this note was actually printed by the Americans as an emergency currency.Has anyone got any photos of the so-called 'Swiss Dinar' that was used in northern Iraq by the Kurds? These should be reported for listing in the Pick Specialised Catalog. Aidan.
That's the one I realy want - the ones the US printed with Saddam's pic on them. I have a Swiss dinars - identical to the later horse notes except these are engraved. I can't belive Pick's doesn't have one - they are readily available.
JBK,they are actually quite scarce. As to the 'Swiss' Dinars, they have never been listed in Pick. Aidan.
I poked around on the I/net and found reference to the US dinars, but it implied that they reprinted the 250 dinars, not 10000. I will be interested to learn more about these. As for those Pick people, they should not advertise the fact that they are missing that note. It was a valid Iraqi ussue, and the best quality one they had. It was an issue of Saddam's Iraq just as were the ones with his picture on them. I don't understand why it isn't in there.
As with most coins and script their value at the end of the day is what someone will pay for it. I was in Libya when Muammar Gaddafi took over the country and kicked the USA out! I still have several Libyan coins from that era but doubt they are very valuable except to me!!
I have quite a few Iraqi banknotes that my dad brought back from his tours of duty in Iraq. I'd post more, but I don't feel like scanning in several dozen notes at the moment.
A little while ago, I started a thread on this same note here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/iraq-25-dinar-1986-banknote-العراق-٢٥-دينارا.358208/ It includes translations and more information about the images on the note. Others joined in and posted additional notes or information.
