Mint mark styles

This is something I've thought about but never really figured out..
Are there some styles of MMs that are valuable? Mainly in reference to cents.
I'm not counting doubled dies OMM or any error.
There was like 15 diffrent Mint marks from San Fran alone.
Just trying to find out if there where any from any mint that are rare or scares and what if any value they might have.

I'd have to say no . Date and mint mark + grade is what gives the coin it's value . I never heard of anyone collecting a coin by the shape of the MM . IMHO

 

Now you have. Collecting by mintmark style is my major focus. As for the OP's question, a few come to mind. Focusing just on cents, the 1928S with the large S carries a bit of a premium. Others that come to mind are the 1945 Micro-S dime (although this is losing its luster). The Trumpet tail S on the 1941 and 1943 quarter and and on the 1941 and 1943 dimes are quite collectable (especially on the 43's). The small D on the 1934 quarter is well worth looking for. Everyone knows about the type 1 and type 2 S's on the 1979 and 1981 dollars, but most don't realize that there also two styles of S on the 1974's (a well-kept secret, especially for Ikes). The also are several varieties of "O" mintmarks on 18th century coins that carry a bit of premium

I actually find it surprising that more attention is not paid to mintmark styles. Among the cents, the ball serif S is found on well under 10% of the total mintage of the 1946's and just a bit over 10% on the on the 1944's.

BTW, if you find a 1946 dime with a sans serif S, send it to me, I'll give a nice comfortable home.

 

I thought you were talking about cents only , and yes I was wrong there are the small mm and other varieties . So my bad .

 

I too took it as the OP was asking about non-varieties which, of course, wouldn't make much sense......

Yes, he said "error", but his intent was clear. Had he simply asked about varieties, there may have been less confusion. Either that or we should better learn to read between the lines....

 

Yes I was mainly wondering about cents. But the info on the other coins is great info as well. (Thanks quarter-back)
There is some great info in there and gives me some where to start as what to look for.
Are there any web sites specifically dedicated to this? I'm guessing there might be a page or two out there someplace that address this but can't say that I have run across any.

 

I'd think the Cherry Pickers Guide book would give you all of the MM varieties that are worth pursuing , Though remember it comes in 2 books . Cents through nickels and Dimes up to Double eagles .

 

Yeah, the CPG has many of them. BTW, I forgot to mention the 1952 quarter with the "huge D". That mintmark was only used on 1952 quarters, and of those, on only two dies.
