Just curious does anyone here buy them for their silver content ? I started buying them recently. I can't justify the 5 dollar or so premium attached to silver eagles. Trying to buy silver as close to melt as possible.
The proof Libertads I bought a couple of years ago had a significant premium on them. If you want to buy silver for close to spot buy silver bullion.
These 90% Mexican silver coins are pretty close to melt: http://www.apmex.com/Product/26879/Mexico_1960_10_Pesos_Silver_Coins_ASW_8357_150th_Anniv_XF_AU.aspx
I'm in TX and believe it or not, unless you have a hispanic dealer, then the .999 sells for less than spot! I stay away from it because the resale value is horrid.
i went on a little road trip today and checked out a local shop. the lady running the store had morgan/peace for $33 and generic for $1.50 over + tax. i was just gonna pick up 3 morgans to supress the urge but then she brought out her generic bin and this was sitting in it. it ended costing me $228 out the door, a little steep but once i saw it i had to have it, i probably would have gone $50/oz on it. TAX is usually a deal killer for me
Cool find, cool countertop too! I do that too, if I have hankering to buy a bunch of bullion i'll scratch the itch with a Morgan or Peace or two.
I like it...I want to pick some up...all I have currently are the uhh pesos I think...they don't have a high silver content, and when I got them they were $2 a piece...about the size of a US half...this is when silver was in the $20s
I only have a couple oz of Mexican silver, but I'd love to have more of it. I don't think I'd pick some up for resale value alone. Although I really like the designs, and that's enough for me. I wouldn't buy them in large quantities though.
Mexican proof silver Libertads are beautiful. A couple years ago I bought a set of them, maybe five coins? They're packaged in a nice dark wood box.
I have a couple of rolls of Libertads and I really like them. I have one 2 oz'er which is really nice to look at. To answer the OP's question, yes their silver content is one of the reasons I buy them but not the only reason.
I have a bunch of the Mexican Onza's. 1 oz. of silver in a 90% coin and I can buy them at spot here in Texas. Some Libertads too.
I just bought a Libertad this week. Its a 2011 in a ANACS MS 70 slab. Got it for $45. It sure catches the eye to look at it.
