do you guys think this is pl or maybe even dmpl ? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=67084&Lot_No=23508
It looks prooflike with the cameo contrast. The mirrors I don't know...PCGS must've had a good reason for not giving it PL. It definitely doesn't appear to have deep mirrors from what little I can tell from the pic....
also what do you think about this one http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=27084&Lot_No=11409 do you think because it is a rattler they didn't give it a higher grade?
The first is nicely frosted but the fields are no where near PL, somewhat common for that date and mint. The second I think is still in that slab because it is properly graded.
I believe the first one is a VAM. There are some clash marks on the obv and the mintmark appears to be doubled, if not tripled. The second is a VAM-1, I think. There is definatley something going on with the 6 in the date.
It depends on the VAM and who's buying it. Some are worth more than others. If you would like to try to figure out the VAM#, go here..... http://www.vamworld.com/Morgan+VAMs+By+Date
My reference is the site I listed. They didn't have a link on the VAM-1 (closed 6). Sometimes there is a suggested value on those links. If someone has a VAM price-guide and knows more than I, maybe they can tell you. I've just started into VAMs. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
not one for vams myself, I have a hard enough time finding nice examples without searching for die breaks, clashes, etc.
Ok, on the 1880 obverse it looks like there are clashes above the zero in the date, to the right near the U and M of unum, and to the left from about lip level to the E. Sorry I took a while to respond. I had to join Heritage to see the photos. I don't know why it let me do it before.
First of all, every Morgan is a VAM. Just think of VAMs as die marriages. Some are just cooler than others. I see no evidence of any clashing on the first coin. By the way, a clash will not have a unique VAM number unless there is a letter transfer.
