Hello there, I've got an 1833 5 Kopeck and was wondering whether it's normal for them to have such a pronounced rim? The rim itself really protrudes which although very battered seems to have preserved the condition of the rest of the coin quite effictively. I haven't seen a coin like such before so perhaps mine has been altered? Hope someone will aid my ignorance
Uneven rims are common feature of Russian coins of that period. I have seen such examples myself. Check out this gallery and try posting the pics of your coins. http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/coin.php?image=img15/149-c140&desc=Russia%20c140%205%20Kopeks%20(1831-1839)
I'm not too sure what moustan meant so I must confirm if we are on the same topic. Is it a silver or copper 5 kopek?
Moustan, thanks for the pictures - it makes it easier to guess what you are on. I cannot confirm if it is some kind of damage i.e. by spooning or it was done at the mint. That said, the details of the eagle you have there looks quite strong. Is your coin struck at the following mint? EM, CM, SPB.
