almost makes me cry to see prices like this http://www.pcgs.com/research_archive/early_pricelist/page5.chtml
Numbers like that are always fun to look at. But, back in the day (1860) the average workers salary was $297 per year*. Some of those coins would have been a day's wages. * http://books.google.ca/books?id=lMt...wCQ#v=onepage&q=wages in 1860 America&f=false
Interesting to note the terminology; I suppose the 1795 "curious head" is what we now call the Jefferson Head. Rare indeed ! A year's wages then and now !
Man, it is cool to look at old things like that. I agree with the OP. I wish we could find those coins at those prices right now.
Cool post. One thing I think that would be interesting (especially for those who are "investing" in coins) is to take a look at the values listed in older books and see what has happened today. I will start a thread on this. I have a 1964 RedBook. Let's take a look at the value of the Roosevelt series from 1946 - 1964 from the perspective of the 1964 Redbook. The only thing I will mention is that the "KEY" dates were different back then. Go figure.
I started collecting coins in 1947..How about that. I could tell you stories that you wouldn't believe.
