I found this same one on ebay here is its link http://cgi.ebay.com/1959-ALASKA-STA...oryZ3458QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem the coin above isn't mine but its in the same condition pretty much.
that looks like a token to me. it is not a commemorative coin as such that was issued back in the day ...
not a great deal. Not listed in So-Called Dollars (Hibbler & Kapens) But I have seen them before. Also: NOT a coin.
Plus, you have to worry about a seller who warns that Alaska might be the last state admitted into the Union. Especially, since Alaska is the 49th state. Hawaii was admitted almost six months later in 1959. *sigh*
"POPULAR COLLECTIBLE STILL TODAY, AS ALASKA IS LIKELY THE VERY LAST STATE TO BE ADMITTED TO THE UNITED STATES." Oops, I missed that one.
Looks to me to be a token specially made just for that event and for the people in and around Fairbanks, Alaska. As for the value of a piece like that, if there is someone out there that has a huge desire for these things then there's no telling what the price may end up being. As far as a catalog value, I havent the slightest idea.
This is a very common token and comes in at least three different varieties. One is somewhat uncommon. It is a municipal good-for token. It could also fall into some other categories making it a medal. It usually sells for a dollar or two though this one is unc which might be driving the price a little.
