How does a coin get elephantiasis of the number?

This coin came across my attention the other day and left me wonder how a coin gets a date like this? I get it if it had something smash over, roll over, etc. the coin and damage it, but as you can see there doesn't appear to be any damage like that which would suggest that happened.

    Your thoughts?

Copper is very soft. I have seen some very strange anomalies by a hit that moved the cooper just so.

The date took a hit that flattened it out.

No, that's exactly what happened. It doesn't take much, copper being as soft as it is.

BTW: It is also good to show the obverse as well. Thanks

The date took a hit after it left the mint. Years of circulation would smooth down any rough edges.
