    Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone could give me a grade opinion on these Morgans. Thanks.

The face of the 1891 has a beautiful amber ring around it. The hair on the 1884 looks like a bit weird also.

    Hmmm...

Not as far as I know. These coins have been sitting in a bag for at least 30 years. In fact I have lots of them, but these had the nicest colors. I have seen some others on the internet that end up getting these colors as well. How can I determine if they have been cleaned? Also, not sure if it makes a difference but I autocorrected these photos on my computer. Here are the origingal photos without the auto correct.

    Thanks for your help.

Both look VF to me [a non-professional]. The 84 has a bit more detail but a rim ding.

I'd say vf-30 on the first, and xf-40 on the second.

It appears that the '84 was removed from a jewelry mount, probably a necklace. As for how you can tell if they were cleaned or not - it comes with experience to be honest. But quite often there are tell tale signs. On this coin if you look very closely you can see the faint scratches in the surface. Also, the darkness in the protected areas.

I agree with GD to a point. I too think it was in a jewelry mount. That would account for the ding at 12:00 and 6:00. I think the dark area is just grime that has built up over time under the mount. The cleaner area is that was becasue the coin was worn as a necklace? and got a cleaning by rub. I would grade the dollar as a low grade XF. worth VF prices because of the ding.

Just my opinion! Take that and an Ike to the Diner and it will get you a cup of coffee!

Thanks for your help. What do you think about the 1891? The colors are beautiful.
