You can't blame that on the boy. There are denarii of Gordian I and II but they never set foot in Rome while emperor so the idea probably belonged to some Senator like Balbinus.

Now that you mention it, and taking a closer look, I think his eyes have something weird in all of them. Maybe he had an "unusual" look and that is why on the one of barbarous style shown by dougsmit, the eyes are so scary
