Definitely plated. A Kennedy half dollar sized solid gold coin would weight well over 20 grams.

There are no 1981 gold 1/2 dollars minted by the United States Mint. Contemporary copper-nickel coins were often gold plated by a third party to make gift sets, but usually not to a coin collector. The US Treasury would consider these coins mutilated coinage and would value them at 80% of face value.

    Why the necro posting?

I've never quite figured out why that happens here; it's hard on a database to keep that much data accessible. This is the only forum I've ever posted at where raising years-old threads is even allowed by the software.
