So, I have an issue. And maybe one of you can help with it. This 1695 'Shillings' has been listed to eBay recently (under shilling). Problem is that a) I'm pretty sure it's a crown, b) the obverse is not right - and c) the Irish (3rd) harp on the reverse was not used/designed until 1700 (reference: The Silver English Coinage From 1649, Seaby, 1968). So, I emailed her and explained (in detail) that she might have a forgery on her hands, but she seems not to be an informed UK coin dealer. At all. And she is not 'doing the math' on this. Maybe ONE of you could independently confirm this and send her an email? I don't think she is trying to defraud anyone (per se), I just don't think she knows anything about the coin she's trying to sell other than what is on the capsule. Thanks. It should be as easy as: -The Irish harp design on your coin's reverse was not produced until 1700 -Your coin is dated 1695 -Time travel is not possible -Your coin is inauthentic /Syllogism'd
Thanks, but I think that it's more about the logical and provable fact that this coin is completely inauthentic. And it's nice to see that you are an education/anti-counterfeiting advocate.
metallurgical test will probably review it has some ferrous material in it or making it magnetic either partially or not of original content

you should get a copy of the standard book of world coins , if your buying it off of ebay, make sure you get it in time engouh to dispute if it turns out to be fake
It comes down to sze, but it looks very similar to Spink 3497 - a 1695 Shilling. I can see why the seller would be upset.
I have a Spink in front of me. 3497 has a very different harp. That's the issue. It can't be authentic if it has the 1700 (crown) harp.
For what it is worth - my limited experience with eBay sellers of Chinese copy/duplicate US cents - the seller "acts confused or defensive" when notified of issue and then ignores you. After reporting the auction to eBay - eBay does not reply back to you or take any action. The auction completes and if not a private sale, you can often see positive feedback from the none the wiser person who purchased the coin.
Okay, maybe. It looks like a third harp and you are suggesting it should either be first or second - else a crown. It comes back to size I think. Is it still on eBay? Actually I am wondering if it a sixpence?

Will not take returns, admits she is no expert, doesn't usually deal in coins like this, bought from anonymous coin dealer, selling for what she paid for it, advises you do your own research to authenticate before buying ... yes, ALL RED FLAGS that yell "I'm fake!" ... I wouldn't touch a coin like that for any price!
Your picture shows a 1st bust (also says a 1st bust). The eBay picture shows a 3rd bust - that wasn't available when the coin was minted. And a different harp to that on eBay.
