Added this $5 half eagle to my collection this morning, paid for with the profit made from a(6) bankroll score of JFK silver halves.(40%) It's been a couple of yrs since I’ve purchased any gold coins. Almost forgot the exciting buzz of adding gold to the collection. Even more so this time since only about a third of the price ($295) came out of my pocket. This latest one will be #7 in my mission to fill a 20 slot Mylar coin page with half eagles( XF-AU) or better. The scans show some lighter areas around the stars on the observe, possibly a Result of some light cleaning. (As im sure someone is bound to point out) lol.:smile It's gold, it’s old and it only set me back $100, grade wise I’m thinking (hoping) Low AU, any opinions appreciated.(the scans don't seem to show the luster )
When I first looked at it I didn't think cleaning. My thought was skin oils from fingers. If I'm correct that's not a bad problem. I don't think gold interacts with organinc acids much at all. But the copper content could be a problem. You might want to get someone to look at it more closely.
I think your on to something KANGA. Now that you mention it it sure does look more like fingerprints.
