This sort of thing always reminds me a little of Roman Vishniac's experiments in photomicroscopy beginning in the 1950s (see https://vishniac.icp.org/exhibition...hotomicroscopy-america-early-1950s-late-1970s), although those were mostly photographs of living creatures if I recall correctly.
