I was going through an old roll of 1963d unc Roosevelt dimes that I have had in a collection for over 40 years. I am seeing double die dimes all over the place but it may just be my getting senile. Every one of them I look at seems to have something. I am enclosing a pic of two of the dimes so that maybe you can tell if I am just hallucinating. On one of them the "D" looks to be double die and on the other the word "Liberty" seems to be double die. Can anyone help me out on this? dddime1.jpg dddime.jpg

Machine doubling. See the doubling on the mintmark? That should tell you it is not a doubleD die. The mintmark was punched into the dies by hand back then. [If the die was doubled it was doubled before the mintmark was added. Hope that makes sense.] So the doubling you see occurred during the strike and affected many of the raised devices (including the mintmark).

Man, coin collecting sure isn't as easy as it used to be. I'm not sure what the difference between machine doubling and double die is but it's obvious I don't know what the heck I am looking for. I can see that I am going to have to do some studying up on this double die stuff. I think I will just sell the roll of dimes on ebay and let it go at that because I am not educated enough in key dates and everything.

I really do appreciate the information Hobo. Thanks for taking the time.

    Take care!

    Chris
