Date on a Jefferson Nickel

Can someone help me figure out what this date is?
Even though the third digit looks like a 3, I know that isn't possible because that would create a date of 1934 which is before the Jefferson Nickel series began.
The third digit does look like a 5 except for the upper part which forms a sort of a "V" where it joins the lower part.
I have not found another example of a 5 that has this "V" shape.

This 2nd image is a 1954 nickel for comparison.
Both nickels are from the Denver Mint.
