I've seen coins and have seen posts about coins that appear to be a proof due to the fantanstic shine. Today I think I found out why.
At a local flea market there is this guy selling an auto polish. The way he demonstrates how great it is is with a coin. He has a bag of coins and constantly takes one out, polishes it with that stuff he is trying to sell. He shows it to everyone and then puts in into another bag. I asked him what happens to the ones he just polished. He said to the bank. I told me he does about 100 to 300 a day. Sometimes, if the flea market is crowded, he does even more. And they all look like proofs when he gets done.

Yep - polish will do the trick. I posted an 1844 quarter someone polished, what a shame.
