I met Beth Deisher at the ANA Show in Baltimore a couple days ago and chatted with her about the National Parks legislation. She made a suggestion in one of her editorials that Theodore Roosevelt be honored on the quarter for that series. I agree with her and so does Peter King. She said the most opposition will come from my commonwealth (Virginia) So, I wrote emails to all three of my representatives (Congressman and Senators) I encourage you all to join me in this effort. Here is my letter to Warner, My letter to Webb was just more straight to the point, since I disagree with him the most politically. ehehe Dear Senator Warner, I have had the honor to have voted for you each time you've run for re-election. I want to thank you for your service and especially for what you have done to help ease our federal tax burden. I wish you all the best in retirement. There is one minor issue where we may have a disagreement. It was my understanding that the entire Virginia delegation made a stipulation that Monticello return to the nickel after the Westward Journey Nickel series ended. I love our Virginia heritage and without a doubt, Virginia has the most attention with regards to subject matter on our nation's coinage. Most believe as I that George Washington's time is up on the Quarter Dollar. He has been honored there since 1932, and before that in medals and countless other monuments, etc. He is on our paper dollar note and the first in the new Presidential Dollar coins. Rep. Peter King (R) of New York has suggested that for the looming National Parks legislation that Teddy Roosevelt be honored on our Quarter at least for this series considering that it was he who was instrumental for the National Park Service. He is the only President carved in a mountain in South Dakota not honored on a coin. Please propose an ammendment on the bill to include Teddy on the front in the Senate version. Thank you Sir.
I think having teddy there would be a wonderfull idea. It would really freshen up a stale old design. I dont want to insult those who love the washington quarter, but it is MHO that it be allowed to end. Now, with that said, getting it done is an entirely different matter. And i really dont think it would happen .. in my lifetime (and i am relatively young lol)
Well, I agree with a new design without good ole George but, not so sure I would like to see Teddy on there either. There has to be something other than a political figure we can put back on our coinage! I'll be writing to our congressmen and see what happens.
Roosevelt did more for national parks than all the presidents that came before him. I think it is a natural choice. I read on Wikipedia that during his presidency Roosevelt commissioned Brenner to make the Lincoln obverse for the penny. Maybe you can take your case a little higher than the congress. GOOD LUCK!!! :mouth:
How about Mt Rushmore on the Obverse. It is a National Monument (part of the NPS) and you get 4 dead presidents (2 Virginians) and Teddy to boot all at once.
I personally like the Washington quarter, and if they chose to return to the old 1932-1998 design I would be quite happy. However, assuming the national park quarter series is official (and I personally don't know if it is...is it?), I do feel that Teddy Roosevelt is the perfect candidate to be on the coin. Roosevelt, IMHO, was a very good president fully worthy of being placed on a coin...so I would support his portrait on the national park series quarter. However, I feel that Washington does belong on a coin and at the conclusion of that series, his portrait should return to it. Preferably, a new portrait of Washington.
For a moment, I thought I was too unpure to respond to this thread, then I realized I don't live in Virginia, and now I'll just wish you luck in your endeavor.
This isn't just for Virginians. It would help to make it a successful attempt if it had the support of the representatives and senators of the other states as well. So it is a measure that all collectors could try and get their Congressmen to support. Well Washington didn't think so, and I think his wishes should be observed. I don't think so for a couple reasons. One it has already appears on several coins including the SD state quarter. Two, more than likely SD will probably want to use it again for their National park quarter.
