For quite a while now, I have been getting skunked on boxes of halves. I was so discouraged that they were even out there still, or that my area was just picked dry. I have searched a few thousand, and never found even one! I probably re-searched someone elses dumps.

So fast forward to today. I went into a bank that was a little out of the way, but only had the intention of getting some dimes that weren't brinks boxes. I had just dumped a $500 skunk of half dollars, some leftover nickels, and figured I had better chances with dimes. (Even though I have NEVER found silver in a roll yet, and have cleared around $1000 in dimes.) So I bought my coins from the teller, and brought the dime boxes out to my car. I drove off, and after a while I thought to myself "Why didn't I at least ask if they had any halves in the teller tray?". They were closing in 10 min, and I was thinking maybe some old lady could of brought some in since it's Sunday. I almost just said forget it, but I figured the worst that could happen is they say no, and the profit from even just one silver would be worth turning around and asking.

So I bust a u-turn, go back in, and I say "Sorry, I forgot to ask, would you happen to have any loose half dollars in your tray?". (The bank was empty, so all the tellers were listening). Everyone said no, but one of the older ones just silently walked into the back, and when she came back she told me she had $5 worth. I took them all, and when she set them on the counter, I immediately noticed at least 1 dirty silver rim. I damn near cracked a ****eating grin right there, I had gone through thousands of half dollars, and here in $5 worth I knew that I finally scored my first silver half. I told the tellers I just liked looking for old coins, she looked at the faces while counting them out, and didn't even blink handing over a silver.

So I played it cool, and walked back out to the car. Mandatory rim check revealed 4 silver coins out of 10 total. A 90% 64', 40% 66', 40% 67', and a 40% 69'. :thumb:

Needless to say, I smiled the whole ride home. Every trip to the bank from now on it's mandatory; I will ask if they have any loose half dollars. I also will be hitting that bank every weekend around closing time, in case whoever brought those in brings more. It's right around an old neighborhood by where my grandfathers house is. Perfect. :D

Just had to share my story with some people that might appreciate it. Hope you all found some silver this weekend as well. I also got 2 war nickels, and a 1905 V nickel out of a brinks roll, couldn't believe it.

Yep... that's the way to do it. I always just ask the teller if they have any halves. A few months ago I hit a "jackpot", forty-five dollars worth that a customer had just brought in; there were six 90% and ten 40% in the lot. So it pays to ask!
