Several CT members sent me coins from their collections. As I work out proper attributions for each coin I will post it here. Since I am sure my tentative attributions are not 100% correct or complete, I hope someone (anyone) will jump in and correct my errors. This is one of the coins that Sallent sent me. Thank you Sallent!! And this is my tentative attribution: Valens AE3 Obv- D N VALENS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right, well centered, edge split Rev- SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE (security of the Republic), Victory (Nike) advancing left, wreath in right hand, palm frond in left hand, Mint mark: HSISC in exergue along with a leaf at Victory's right foot. Siscia RIC 15b type x (?) 2.1 grams 19.05 mm Question: Is anyone aware of AE Valens reverse featuring a leaf in the exergue by Victory's right foot? I have not found it. For that reason, I am not confident in my RIC attribution.
Your mintmark is actually palm branch ASISC, which means it is RIC IX Siscia 7b. Here is a good site for I.D.ing many LRB's. http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm the excel list for this one is "victory advancing left"
For that coin, you only have to look on the first page, far right, third line down (iii). But for other coins in the series, you'll need the whole thing.
I'll figure it out. But, seriously, I copied the pages @Roman Collector kindly posted and blew them up so I won't have to squint; Today I'll print them and and install them in the attribution section of my growing ancient coins information binder.
Naw, pretty easy once you realize what you are looking at. It is a simple listing of each mintmark one will encounter of each type and ruler.
