Picked this up today Antoninus Pius AE Dupondius. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P, radiate head right / COS IIII S-C, Salus standing left feeding snake arising from altar to left & holding rudder to right. Cohen 279 B.M.C. 1732 RIC 798, sear5 #4269 was too hard to pass. EDIT: pic was to small to see.
Pius and other 2nd century bronzes are out there in all grades and price ranges and well worth seeking out in good looking but well used condition. This one is nice. I hope other interesting types will join it in your collection.
Thanks, I was gona try n get a decent tet of Nero or an As of tiberius, but with the price and quality of this
I was looking at the scratchs on the next with a magnifier, and im pretty sure they were made in antiquity, more interestingly, it looks like its covering another scratching/inscription. that, or they just thought Antoninus needed some hair on his chest.
That is a nice coin with even green patina. Congratulations Randy. Your first Antoninus? now you have to go for a Faustina Senior to keep him company. Here is a statue of Antoninus Pius in heroic pose adorning the entrance of a Roman Fort (Saalburg) located about 10 miles from my home.
thanks this was my first one, not a beaty but needs more cleaning. I can makea few letters and the eye show alot more detail. as for Faustina I got one (I think ) and jr. too, but I'll have to keep an eye for a better looking wife.
I'd love to live in a place like that. about 10 years ago I took a class to to europe. The hotel was a large marble room for 3 people ( barthroom was for 1/2 a person) No AC when we woke up we could see the the Colosium from the doors. was very cool.
