I was wondering too. I saw some really cool royalist counterstamps on them. Wonder how many of them are real ...

20 reales: I can't really tell by the pics but its probably worth anywhere between $100 and $200. It looks VF-XF in my eyes, but I don't have much experience with Spainish coins.

Now I have very little experience in 8 reales but yours appears to be Mexico City Mint in VF? condition, worth about $50-$60. Doug could help you here.

The 8 reales is damaged and had a mount removed - value in that condition maybe $20. The 20 reales is probably low VF, value $75-$80.

the 8 reales is damaged from manufacter not from a mount removed...and the 20 reales is VF and is value is at least 200$

I wouldn't question GD because when it comes to Reals, he knows his stuff.

Its not mine. I saw it on the bay graded as XF, GUARANTEED genuine and for $350 and was wondering how much it really is worth.

It was a great informative post about counterstrike coins and the last stand of the spanish. I wanted opinions about this coin in particular.

Its a beautiful coin no doubt with a lot of history, but whether its worth $350 or not I don't know.

Not so, it was a mount removed. Look at the pics attached below. The blob at 12 o'clock on both sides is the remains of solder. And you can se ehow the solder overlaps the denticles.

The other arrows point to file marks where someone tried to remove that solder and did a poor job.

Hardly, here a link to one in much better conditon than yours that only sold for $83. 1864 20 reales Yes, it was a few years ago, but they haven't really increased much in that time. So given the better condition and the time frame - yours is worth what I said.

    Guaranteed by whom ?

Normally that coin would sell for a good bit more than $350, but I find it odd that there is no countrerstruck date, 1824, as I have never seen one without it. I would be a bit skeptical.

    Thanks GD.
I have no idea who it is guaranteed by. Most probably the seller :p
I have messaged the seller. Let's see what the reply is.

Besides the no Counter Mark, there any other problems with the coin? It is very clean for a coin this old, may be it was cleaned?

Definitely cleaned, but harshly or not ? Can't say based on those pics. I see nothing else.

And do not misunderstand, that is not a countermarked coin. That is a counterstruck coin - huge difference. A countermark is but a small design, usually 5-10% of the size of the coin, struck on an existing coin. A counterstruck coin is when an existing coin is used as a planchet and then struck with new dies that impart an entirely new design over top the old design of the entire coin.
