Chester Alan Arthur became president after James Garfield was assassinated in 1881. A lot of people were not happy about that at first because Arthur had been a political hack in the past, who had looked to line his pockets with public money. He had been Tariff Collector at the Port of New York where his income was higher than the President of the United States. Arthur surprised his critics by supporting civil service reform, and was, in general, a decent president. He might have run for a term of his own as president had he not had Bright's Disease, a disease of the kidneys which was incurriable at the time. He made a token effort to get the 1884 Republican presidential nomination, but was out of the running after the first ballot. Because of the fact that Arthur never ran for president on his own, campaign pieces for him are very scarce. This is the only one I have have, and I think that it is rare. Here is an 1880 campaign jugate piece, which shows Garfield and Arthur together.
lol! That’s all they have so far. lol! They have more to give me I think. The tokens are interesting.
