My family bought a 2010 silver mint set for Christmas for me. This is my first modern mint set. When I opened it though the Lincoln $1 is out of the circle cut for it and is trapped between the plastic layers, the coin isn't loose at all. Just obvious that its not in its right place.

My question is should I try to exchange this? or is it really no big deal?

I say leave it. It's like an error coin. Just not a coin.

I would return it. The US Mint is still selling these sets. The way to do it is simple. Call the US Mint and tell them that you have a set with a coin that has come loose in the holder. They will gladly replace the set for you as long as the item is still available for sale, which these 2010 sets still are (incredibly).

When a proof set has a coin out of place like this it is NOT like an error coin. No dealer that I know of will pay a premium for a set that has a coin or coins out of place in the plastic holders. Nor will any collectors. This issue actually lowers the desirability of the set.

One more bit of advice. Listening to advice given on the internet forums is dicey at best. Many people do know what they're talking about but many don't. Being able to tell the difference isn't very easy and can be downright dangerous.

Thanks Mike, and that was my initial thought. I appreciate your help.

return it because if you ever plan to sell, people like me will be OCD about it and not buy it :)
