This is a 1989 "Pattern Set" from South Africa. Unlike most patterns that are being tested for design, these were produced for another reason, which is of slight debate. Most likely they were produced for vending/coin-operated machine manufacturers to test the lighter weight and smaller size of the next generation of coins. However, given the inclusion of such small denominations which usually aren't accepted by vending machines, there is speculation that they were produced to help people familiarize themselves with the new sizes. Their denominations are listed as letters, A through I. A = 5 Rand B = 2 Rand (Replacing a banknote) C = Rand D = 50 Cent E = 20 Cent F = 10 Cent G = 5 Cent H = 2 Cent I = Cent While note necessarily a rare set, they don't seem to come up for sale frequently. I suspect a lot of these were thrown out or broken up and used for their intended testing purpose.
