I am new at collecting coins but I'm loving it so I've been studying about coin rarities. Well today I found a penny from 1985 with a D mint under the date but I saw that it had either a really small d to the right of the date or a circle. I looked online before posting this and no matter what I couldn't find anything about this coin with the two marks. Is this a rare 1985 penny or a common thing? The coin is a lol dirty I think can clean it a bit so it's more visible but there is a D or O shaped letter extruding from the penny after the date. It's going to be hard to tell from the picture, I'm sorry for now till I post a better one.:)

Welcome David to CT. I've never heard/seen a cent with a mintmark next to the date and I doubt the person punching the die would place it there in the first place. Its probably a die chip or a plating blister.

    Hi. Welcome to CT.

Also I took your pic and blew it up. What I see you might be referring to is next to the date and is probably a gas bubble in the plating rather than being something the mint intended to do.

Thank you guys for the replies, here are the better pictures I promised to put up. I took two pics, oh and btw can that make by it make the penny worth more than a Pennie to a collector?

What did you use to clean it? Most collectors prefer coins that are uncleaned, and consider cleaned coins damaged. In this case it doesn't really matter because that coin is only worth a cent, but make sure you think about it a little before trying to clean an expensive coin.

Welcome to the forums by the way!:welcome:

No bro, its actually quite common with cents in the 80s. You'll find coins so blistered, Abe will look like the Toxic Avenger lol

:thumb: Thank you guys, since day one you all have been a great deal of help. Plus I'm new at collecting and you guys have accepted me well and I thank you all. Oh and I did clean the penny with ketchup since I really wanted the mark to be seen but I knew it would lower or make it worth nothing. I've always been a collector at heart, finding a rarity or a "gem" almost gives me a adrenaline rush. Thanks guys again. :) p.s. I have seen a lot of "collectors shows" which don't make me an expert but have taught me a few things, like leave old things how they are, rust, all the old patina if its old, rare and most likely a antique find. There are just few exceptions though.

David, dont clean your coins anymore, or atleast until you know for certain what you have. If this was a rare coin, you could have ruined it by cleaning it.

You can try selling it on eBay. A guy over at LCR just sold one with a gas bubble on Abe's head for about $80. That's more the exception than the rule though so don't get your hopes too high, but it probably would still sell. I've sold one with an I missing from LIBERTY for $23. There are people out there who collect errors just like others collect varieties.

Ketchup belongs on hamburgers, not on coins.

It also belongs on frenchfries, hotdogs, sandwiches, and corn dogs too. :)

David a word of advice ,if your using your real name change it to something different, so the ID thieves do not have your real name. It just a way to protect yourself from internet trolls , and thieves. Welcome to Coin Talk . Dillan

OK, off topic, but mustard belongs on hot dogs, not ketchup. This should start a good argument!

I'd love to see a really good, focused, closed up of the date and area. That "mark" looks really interesting, as marks go.
