I recently became the owner of a raw MS 1892 Carson city Morgan dollar and the 2 in the date is filled in and slightly raised between the very bottom and the loer right part of the curve. The coin does have some slight marks from a possible die clash. I am hoping that is the case and it's just from the 's' in 'states' that caused this. The coin is proper weight, size, color. The 2 is also in correct place, color, with no seams. If anyone has ever seen any odd looking dates on an authentc Morgan please let me know. I am planning on sending it to NGC for certification but want to know if it may be a fake or not first. Also want to know if they WILL Grade it or not having an 'iffy' date. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Coinsnake
Snake, Welcome to the neighborhood! It would help to have photos before passing judgement on it. Chris PS. If you would like to use this photo of a cornsnake as your avatar, you are more than welcome to do so.
http://www.vamworld.com/ Is a website you should check out. 19 different VAM varieties for that date and MM
There many reasons the 2 could be filled in , broken die , so check out the Vam link Billyray suggested , good luck . rzage
Thank you soooo much Billyray!! I think it's the first one. It says some specimens have the base of the 2 filled in. This makes me feel much better. I will use that site a lot!!!!
Snake, please be aware that NGC will not attribute any VAM that is not a "Top 100" or "Hot 50". None of the 92-CC's are in either of these categories, so don't waste extra money for the attribution. Chris
