Here is my Capped Bust Half pride and joy. I posted it before here but that was a long time ago and many more members have joined since then...

It is worn, in F-10ish condition but one you don't see every day. It's an 1808 over 7, O-101 without the die cracks -- check it out. According to the Bust Half Nut Club (BHNC) there are only 4 or 6 of these known however, this is the only one you can see a picture of according to BHNC members.

Here are a few links in which it was discussed. (This one will link you back here to the older post with more pictures :D)

    Ben: As you originally posted:
"Since it's never before been published then do you think (after it's published) it'll get it's own Overton Number or just have an asterisk?"
Actually the die states are noted with a small letter (usually O-101a, for example).

It is really neat to see something that is a new (for you and me, and the Overton listings) and thanks for showing it to us.
If you really insist, I guess that you may forward it to me as my secret Santa.

    Hry Bones!
Awesome coin! I just recently got into Bust Halves and love them! I have all the major books to do with Bust halves!
Was wondering how you put a value on something this rare?

What a pickup! I assume you bought this one for under 100 :)

I agree with your grade. 10-12.

Wow, wow, wow. If you don't mind me asking, have you had any value estimates on this piece? I have seen people pay moon money for rare varieties of bust halves.

    Actually VG-10 to F-12.
    Just being technical.

Thanks Guys for the responses. Yes Big Z the cost was around $60.00 and was told then I paid too much, LOL. Reckon if I were to really publicize the coin and sell it thru one of the MAJOR auction services it might fetch $1500 - $2000. You know with an ad in one ot the coin rags a month or so ahead of time. It would however be sold raw, if I were to sell.

The Overton Numbers as you know don't recognize die cracks. Not in all instances though as evidenced by all the (a) varieties listed in the latest book. Let me put it this way, I'm not a member of the club and don't get the opportunity to lobby for it's inclusion in Edition 5.

Also IF the there are other examples held by the BHNC members and nobody else, I would think they'd be chomping at the bit to have the sub variety listed. Remember, this is the only pictured example available...

Personally, I think this is the ULTIMATE First Strike coin. The die shattered after the first or second planchet was stamped, and I've got one. The mint went on to produce the rest of the run on this die with the cracks. Thus according to all the books, "All 1808/7, O-101 Bust Half Dollars have die cracks around the rim..." ;)
