AU as Paddy posted with Lincoln cents is Almost uncirculated. On AU's the high points on the coin will show a slight rub, or loss of luster.
That is die deterioration at it's finest.
I would say that it is AU. It definitely hasn't seen much circulation.

That is classic die deterioration. But hey, just send it in and have it looked at. Then there won't be anyone left to argue with.
The details that you are seeing around the ear are deeper than the damage.
Do some studying on die deterioration, you will find confirmation in Fred's answer.
