So pretty much today yesterday (sunday) its now monday...
I was looking all over the place...(almost all of washington)
and not a single coin store was open that day...except for one...

I was wondering..."why are most coin stores closed on sundays???"

And as for my frustration...I called a certain coin shop (whose name I will not mention)
and asked for Barber Half Dollars and he was like yes we do, im like yay
then next thing you know he was telling me dates one by one..

"1822....1830..." and im like "what?" and he tells me that they are called
Seated Barber Half Dollars....I'm like u mean Capped Bust Halves and he said
confidently NO...and graded N? im like "what the hell is N?"
N stands for nice, on a CG scale....and he tells me all this BS**
about the CGS (coinography grading scale) im like u mean the Sheldon Grading Scale?
and he's like what is that...ugh..I had to hang up....

If you're a Coin Shop...or any shop selling stuff...know your products first
before setting up a shop where people might ask for information or
    inquire about an item...

Its' people like these guys who put a disgrace to our hobby...I find it insulting
for someone who thinks they know everything...hike up the price and have unsuspecting
people purchase items from the 3x or even 4x its premium....

Do you see why we see less coin collectors???...because of people like him!!!

sorry, I had to vent...I just wanted to talk about the long day I had yesterday

To be fair, sunday is a day where there is Football :D

Plus, there are a number of shows that are open only on sunday, so it may be a time to replenish stock.

You know, you may just be cutting off your nose to spite his face. Did you stop to consider that you might be able to find something nice at his shop for a really good price since he appears to be totally out of touch with the hobby as we know it?

As for shops being closed on weekends (not just Sunday), many of these dealers travel within the state (or nearby states) to attend shows hoping to find new inventory. Some of them even have appointments to assess private collections, and they can't do it on weekdays because they have to attend to the shop.

Are you sure you didn't dial the wrong number? Your experience sounds like somebody was messing with you.

Years ago our phone number was just one digit different from a taxi service and we got calls all the time saying, "Send a taxi to . . . ". My father would try to explain they had dialed the wrong number but often to no avail. Usually it would be the same people that dialed the wrong number so he started telling them, "He's on his way!" Naturally, they would call later asking where he was. I guess eventually they learned to be more careful dialing.

Go knock the crap out of this guys stock with cheap finds! But if he acts like this he's probably overpriced anyway!

it was over-priced.....I just didnt care...I was already ****ed off...
maybe I over-reacted but that's where the "frustration" came in

and as for sunday...Oh that's where they've been going....
and I thought every single coin collector is religious...hehe lol

acsf89 ... what do the numbers 13/73, 13/50, etc. designate in your sig?

  11. Hobo

    Hobo Squirrel Hater

It means there are 73 Barber Half Dollars (in a complete set) and he has 13 of them in VG or better.

    13/73 = 13 out of 73
    VG+ = VG or better

I agree, I would hit his shop in a heartbeat ! I can be as dumb as the next guy an am probably even dumber, but he just might have an inventory he doesn't know he has ? Businesses like coin, antique, collectible shops aren't like plumbing shops. You don't have to KNOW anything to be a dealer. You just need some inventory. I mean, you might need some knowledge to be successful, but there isn't any testing done to get a business license. This is the kind of stock Cherrypickers live for. Of course, he might be a "good ole boy" who wants to see how much YOU know. lol

Either way, it sure wouldn't hurt to check the guy out. IMHO

And I also agree, NFL or coins. NFL wins for 19 weeks out of the year. Week 20, it beats everything else including eating. (I left the by weeks out of the count)

First question what time did you call? Second question are you sure he was open?

You can call the carpet shop my brother owns 24/7 and the phone will be answered "Schmidt's Carpet". Why? Because the number goes to MY cellphone. If you call I may be at the shop, I may be at the Hospital. You call on the weekend afternoons I will be at home and you will have woken me up because I am trying to get some sleep because I have to go in and work thirds at the hospital. As mentioned that dealer may be at a show, or he may be home trying to relax and spend time with his family when you called him on a Sunday. Most people would never even think of trying to find a coin shop on a Sunday so he may have started pulling your leg for that reason. I mean if I get a call Sunday afternoon from someone who wants to know if I have any remnants, and he wants one big enough to do a 20 by 30 foot room I'll probably tell him sure, come on down, I'm not in the shop at the moment though. I'm across the street. Just come on over and start knocking on the door. You'll have to knock hard though or I probably won't hear you. Then I'll roll over and go back to sleep hoping he follows instructions. The building across the street is the Sheriffs Dept and the County Jail.

I'm with the others. I'd be there cherry picking all I could. I also thought he might just be playing you as a "good ol boy" but when you pulled out the Sheldon Scale I think he'd have to at least act like he knew that then.
So I'd guess he really doesn't know much. Good luck with the searching.

Well im pretty sure I called his coin shop...it even says its open on sundays on
his website and also im pretty sure he didnt know what he was talking about
if you spoke to him...you would have understand that he was confused...

But then again I shouldn't but him down...maybe I could get bargains
out of him...who knows...I shouldn't judge a book by its cover....

ill go there this weekend and see what his shop is all about..

Why would a shop be closed on Sunday? - because we like a day off too.
The shop I work in is closed on Wednesday and Sunday.

Realize that a coin shop is not the chain gas station that is open 24/7. I've managed a few of those and fired enough people for stealing cash, cigs etc. when the boss (me) wasn't around. This is usually done by stopping in unanounced on your day off.

Now imagine you own a coin shop with millions in inventory. Do you just hire people off the street based on a resume? Nope, you hire people like me that have a decent knowledge of coins and a proven record of being trustworthy based on other jobs I had involving large amounts of money and inventory. I didn't ask my boss for a job. He asked me if I wanted a job there.
People with my background are few and far between. There are many that would actually qualify on this forum and there are a few of us that have been lucky enough to be asked to work in a shop.

In our shop you can NOT use our bathroom as it's behind the counter and very few are allowed back there period. There's a restaurant down the block.

If we were to be open 7 days a week my boss, one coworker and I would work seven days a week. I'm getting lazy as I get older. Five days a week is enough.

I understand how your frustration just compounded. However, take in consideration everybody deserves a day off. My coin dealer on a regular basis shuts his store early and stays open longer sometimes. I just go with the flow and try for another day.
