I kinda feel bad about that, but I have looked and looked for varieties too. Every time I think I have something cool, it's machine doubling, PMD, etc. You name it. Every one of us puts a ton of time and effort into our hobby, at least we roll searchers do. The thrill is the hunt, but it helps to find something once in a while. If I ever find another one, I would work out a swap with you.

The best I could do with the scanner I have was the crop I posted earlier. The top of the G is short and there is the serif at the bottom with the denticle in the center (at least I think that is what they are called)
    Thanks for the pics,
    Gary

    Hey Guys !

Here's the update. I took the coin to Sahara Coins here in Las Vegas. The guy was great. He was not aware of the variety at first and it wasn't in any of his catalogues. I directed him to the Lincolnresource site. He didn't find it there until I showed him where it was listed as one of the top fifty varieties. He read the article and took another look at the mule. Then he was quite interested. He verified that in his opinion it is a genuine item that matched the 1989 reverse with the 1988 D obverse.

Now, admittedly, I am getting excited, as this verification agrees with what we thought I found.

The next step he suggested was that he would contact the PCGS to see if they will even attribute the variety ? He thought the grade would come in at 50-54, which is a huge downside I guess ? But at least we know it's real.

Advice and suggestions are really welcomed right now, because I honestly don't know what to do next.

I can't get to the Pawn Stars show at the SunCoast today. Would have been fun to show it on TV maybe ?

Guys, I got a couple of better scans before I put it in the mail and posted them on the Lincoln Resource site. Everyone there agreed it was the RDV-006 without question. Mr. James Wiles at CONECA is going to look at it for me. I have been busy searching for a population with no luck. It was featured again in the DVNMagazine in issue #14. It is now listed by CONECA, The Lincoln Resource, Variety Vista. I also sent a scan to Charles Daugherty at Coppercoins. I am hoping he will feature it with a listing also ? Perhaps as soon as I get it back ?

Here are the better scans; The white marks are the mylar. I already had it in a flip.

I am calling it a 1988 and 1/2 D, since it's the 88 on one side and the 89 on the other. lol

Thanks for wishing me well guys. I did get my heart broken a bit over this last night.

I showed my son the pages showing the coin on the Lincoln Resource site, then we went to the thread I started with the scans of it. I was elated when the senior members there felt it was authentic and quite a find.

Well, my son just said, "Gee, I didn't know there were so many pennies, they all look the same to me". I know now that I should not have let my meager collection sit dormant for 40 years. My fault here.

I tried to explain that fewer than 6 people have one of these, but he just didn't get it.

Anyway, the show in Boston is over, so I might hear something from Mr. Wiles this week ?

    Thanks

My coin has been attributed by Mr. James Wiles (CONECA) and was forwarded to ANACS for grading. It has a shipping date of 9/15.

I did a bit of research on the D's and to date only 10-11 have been found. I feel very fortunate to have gotten mine. ANACS shows a total population of 4 last time I checked. One individual says he has acquired 5 and they were all graded by ANACS, so perhaps they haven't updated the list with the additional coin yet ? Then there is the one that I sent in.

Hopefully, this transition coin will be a breakthrough piece ? I won't know what I intend to do with mine until I get it back and see what grade was placed on it.

    Thanks for the information,

    gary

I found the easiest way to tell was to compare the reverse to both an 88 and 89. By sitting the three coins alongside each other it was very easy to spot. Although I did do that about 50 times. lol I did send some pics in and later the coin for certification.

Not only is the "G" different, the placement of the initials and the strike are also different.
Once you see it though, it is much more obvious.

    Thanks guys,

Thanks, Kenny and all you guys. I will let you know the grade soon. There was a hold for payment because neither the attributor or ANACS told me how they wanted the money. I took care of that as soon as I learned of it and the scheduled return date is Wed. Really getting antsy now to tell the truth.

GUYS ! I just checked my order and it was shipped today. It came in at 55 making it the 2nd one in the ANACS population report. There aren't any graded higher than that yet.

I cannot wait for it to get here ! This is worse than being a little kid on Xmas eve !

Thank you. Sometimes I find some die cracks too, or even clips like this one

I do look at a lot of perfect cents though that are about as common as they come. My last 2 boxes only had 14 rolls between them that were not 2010 D. Then I went through 60 CWRs and got skunked.

But it happens just enough to keep us hooked I think.

Gary ...just curious, you found this one in the Las Vegas area because i think other 88 D's have been found in MO

The 88 P's have generally been found in the Northeast. Snowman

Yes. But the three you know of I think were found by a man Living in Arkansas. Near MO, I think. I have been in touch with him, but wish to respect his privacy.

I checked a lot of sites and did a lot of e-mails and have located 8 of the 9 other ones. One owner, I was not able to contact. But it seems those are held by 5 people.

Roll searching more recently, I came across 20 CWR that held a lot more Philly coins than I generally see along with some wheats. One had paper glued on the reverse like it had been on display ?

My theory is that people come here from all over and bring change. So it would not necessarily help pinpoint where the others were released.

Hopefully, they only stamped a few thousand while opening the box of new 89 obverse dies. LOL
