Why would someone do this to a War Nickel?

I'm thinking it is Gold Plated I got it in a group of war Nickel's that I bought. It's Gold all the way around and pretty evenly colored. Who ever did it did a good job I just can't figure out why. I plan on keeping it because it is pretty cool looking. Does anyone think it is anything other than gold plated? The color is a little darker golden. Ice

    I think it's just toned.
It's not an unusual color for nickels.
I don't generally care for toned coins but this golden hue on nickels is pleasing to me.

If it is toned it is very smooth the color is pretty even over the whole coin. Ice

That's toning I believe. I have some coins that have a gold tone to them that are not silver, and the shade is close to your war nickel.

Can't tell from the pictures, but I agree that it could just be toning. I have seen plenty of war nickels that tone a solid golden color.

And, as far as weighing the coin, I don't think that will give you an answer either way. If it were plated in gold, the weight difference would be so small that it would be within tolerance for the planchet weight.

I mentioned some time ago to a friend that I didn't have a single gold coin in my collection. The next time he visited he brought me this. He's a metallurgist so gold-plated this German mark for me. I think it was very thoughtful of him. (The scans aren't very good but it's a gorgeous colour in hand.)

Could be as simple as an experimental trip into the oven.
