Coinstar rejection process

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by JustAnotherCoin, Oct 5, 2022.

  1. I noticed that the coinstar machines take 1959 Lincoln cents but reject 1958 and earlier dates, the 1958 is the same weight and metal content as the 1959s but they get rejected. Does anyone know the process behind this mystery? Why does the coinstar machine reject wheat cents?

The machines only accept cent - quarter of US coinage. Having to deal with coin stars as well other machines in a retail food store I can tell you all about how they are set. Any coin that doesn't match the spects of a us cent through quarter will be kicked out.
The machine that resembles a large refrigerator has very little inside.
The bottom open to the floor holds two rectangular plastic boxes on dollies. When these are full the machine sends a message that it needs service. Basically a tech comes out seals the two boxes and replaces them with empty ones. Any coin that doesn't match a cent to a quarter is kicked out.
A Canadian steel dime will cause lots of your change jar to be kicked into the rejection .
The secret is to dump slowly and to pay attention to the coins being rejected.
The machine can be programmed to handel any currency...but again limited to the agreement between the store and coin star.
99% of the time rejects are do to something on the coin, a piece of lint or paper and FO in or on the coin will cause rejection.
As coin star doesn't want to be ripped off so their machines are top of the mark in technology. However on the floor under the machine lots of coins that missed the two plastic boxes. The floor is covered in coins.
Which the tech needs to be observed cleaning up.

Go though a hand fully from the rejection bin....one of those coins has something on it, or again some sort of FO in the bin. Which caused it to reject it as well other coins. And remember that US cents have different weights.

Thats not true. They accept cents through dollar coins. They wont take IKEs though as they dont fit, anything silver, steel cents, or foreign coins.

It's literally on their webpage and I've put half dollars and small dollar coins in them countless times

I check the coinstar at my local grocery store every time I go in to shop. It's amazing how much change is in the rejection bin that no one notices but me. It's got to the point where I no longer will take it like I used to. There's never anything over face value in there. Only once did I find a silver dime in there. Other than that, it's all normal modern coins that are in it. Always just dimes, nickels, and pennies, mostly pennies though.

Not sure why they get rejected, but maybe 1 out of 4 trips into the store yields a hand full of normal change from the rejection bin on the coinstar.

Strange. I never had that problem.

Talking about CoinStar. I recently noticed that 3 of the places I frequently visit to dump my metal detected coins no longer use the CoinStar machine. They use another company. I haven't tried them yet.

If they were smarter they would keep all the silver coins and sell them at melt value :wacky:;):greedy:

    I guess not :hilarious:

Again the machines as set so that anything that doesn't match the criteria gets rejected. They are a fee for service... as long as they get the change and rent from the retail store they could careless.
I feel for the techs....as they cannot take anything.. and are actually followed up on to watch the stores tapes to make sure nothing is taken.
You wouldn't believe how many coins are under the machine on the floor.

Now I like the guy who cleans coins for the bank from fountains and such. As they get crud on them from laying in the water. This guy has a small cement mixer that he mixes in his cleaners that cleans the coins. He gets 30% of the value. ;)
