I posted one of these coins that I cherrypicked a few weeks ago in the error forum. I recently starting researching it's value to discover that this is a population 5 coin (my cherrypick being the 5th) and only one coin in MS66 in NGC holders. As I was researching EBay I came across the second one for sale for a very fair price which I paid happily. So being that I now own 2 out of the 5 pieces in this grade I own 40% of the graded population of this particular variety in this grade. I don't think there are too many coins you could ever do that with. I know it's kind of dorky but I thought it was neat. You think that is enough percentage that I could effect the price?
Probably not, but if I were you I'd search high and low for the remaining examples. Then you could do some damage.
All depends on how much you are willing to spend! It can be done. Amazing Morgans... that first one looks almost like a 66 IMO.
I think it's real neat! Yes you should look for the others but don't know how much you will change the price but it's worth a shot.
Those are awesome Morgan VAMs. It would be great if you could get 1-2 more and corner the market. I wonder how many ANACS has attributed. TC
some guys tried to do that with silver a long time ago.... they got arrested. Dont get that 3rd one or you will be trying to corner the market and the feds will come get you!
The Hunt brothers were a whole different kind of animal. Cornering the market with 6 pieces won't get you in trouble. After all, Colonel E.H.R. Green (i think) once owned all 5 1913 Liberty nickels.
Nice Morgans, the pitted varieties can be pretty cool. One thing I would say though, overall VAMs really aren't that popular, yet. So I wouldn't hold much faith in the numbers that have been graded. 1A is on the Hot 50 list, but I wouldn't call it very popular, so the only people who are going to pay for the attribution are VAM collectors, which make up a pretty small portion of coin collectors. With the '85 being a relatively common coin in higher grades, I would bet there are more unattributed high grade coins out there.
It wouldn't happen to be VAM 1A would it? Lol, why don't you really corner the market and go for 1A, B, and C, so then if anyone wants a Hot 50 1885 pitted reverse they'd have to go to you. Note to self: Get VAMs 1A-C before they're all gone .
Lmao sure you have a market for a coin that has no buyers. Not to mention hundreds more shall be found.
No offense folks, but I don't get the attraction to the whole VAM thing... that said, to each their own
I like Vams. Especially the big ones. Like Hot Lips or Scar Face even the Donkey Tail. Kind of like an Error and Morgan all in one. But that why this hobby has so many different things to collect.
VAMs are like many other variety collections. If you can get the varieties BEFORE they become popular, they are MUCH LESS expensive than AFTER they become popular. Of course, who knows how long it will be before they're popular, if ever? I'd say, "Go for it."
The idea of "cornering" the market is cool and if it's possible by a mere mortal, that makes it more interesting. What the Dutchman is suggesting is just a sophisticated way of saving rolls of 1950-D nickels when they came out, etc. Makes me think of those Wide or Narrow rim lincoln cents (1999, 2000, etc). When you find one, SELL it because it seems people are finding them all the time.
