NAC auctions 124 & 125 concluded today. Some really nice pieces were auctioned particularly some nice Flavian denarii https://www.arsclassicacoins.com/auctions/auction-125/ as per usual, some extremely high hammer prices. Didnt win any of the coins I was considering in particular, some of the coins were previously slabbed and were in recent auctions within the past year. Most finished much higher being auctioned raw! Was anyone successful at winning from the auction?
These sales (as well as Nomos) were brutally expensive in many places due to a number of new players in China and Russia spending mountains of money. I had a few "big" lots I was targeting and was sorely outbid, although I did manage to purchase a coin I've wanted for almost 10 years (this exact example). I'll share the images here when it arrives! On the positive side, on the whole, the coins I consigned substantially exceeded my expectations. As always, there were some surprises above and below where I thought they would sell - in these weeks of $10M+ sales, it's impossible for every coin to sell for top-tier prices - but it was overall an atypically strong sale.
Won five lots. Fortuna was with me. Admittedly, I was kind of amused when at the start of the 'Viggo' collection the auctioneer claimed it was the most complete collection of Flavian imperial provincials ever assembled. Well, I have more.
No luck here. I did manage to push the bid button a few times before reason told me to stop. I had lots of fun looking at some interesting RR coins. On the plus side, I think, I won a Domitian denarius in another auction where I did not bid??? I asked the seller if there was a mistake. If the coin is mine, I will post it when it arrives. If the coin is not mine, I will post the seller's pics.
Yeah, insane prices on the top quality Greek coins. I had my main target in the Nomos sale, but it went well over what I could afford. Then the prices in NAC were out of control. First coin that came along that I liked and had no bidders I jumped on it. After initial concerns with my choice, (it was spur of the moment and not a coin I'd done much research on), I'm quite happy with the outcome now. Will show it when it turns up.
