Who remembers these counterstamped dollars? I guess they're still circulating, but not as much as they once did ;)

I’ve a Kennedy Half with a “MLK” counterstamp on it. In your opinion is that just another idiot who defaced a coin? Or is that characterization contingent on one’s politics?

I kind of like collecting stuff that pushes the envelope politically, even if I don't care for the message. Especially counterstamped coinage because it is a contemporary reflection of an opinions that are quite divisive in our country now.

When I posted this on discussion boards I actually was contacted by the guy that made these - glad someone noticed it and kept it apparently

Love that sentiment, and the "no more lies / no more war" Jefferson nickel was quite well counterstamped. Personally, I don't go in for any defaced currency less than 100 years old. I figure the defacer is unlikely around to benefit from my purchase then (although some might deface an old coin in a contemporary setting - I'm generally against encouraging such activity).

Unlike some "novelty" bills, the 3 of those I've seen were not overprinted on real bills. So, if someone is passing those as real money, that's criminal.

Hmm... isn't there a trial going on for someone who was recently killed for spending a suspected counterfeit $20?
