Yes, the key date with only 1,472,700 minted. A lot less are around today. In G-4 the Red Book has a value of $550. I purchased this for just under $100 a few years ago from a dealer. He didn't like worn coins. I don't mind them at all, especially like this one. This is definitely a G-4 obverse with a stronger reverse.
But at least it has full rims and a clear readable date. That's what drew me to this coin. Being the key date was a great bonus, especially at the price.
Very attractive circulated example! Looks like PCGS/NGC G-4s usually sell for a bit over $200 when auctioned. I'd buy em like that at $100 all day long.
Nice coin, you mean rotated die.I understand what you ment by that but really use the correct terminology.
I get large volumes of circulated coins five days a week that need to be sorted, and counted. I just saw stars on the rim, the coin was buried under other coins, and thought, that doesn't look right. Pulled it out and was in shock. Prettiest coin I'd ever seen in person, and held in my hand. I couldn't believe it. I've also found two standing liberty quarters, and six winged liberty dimes over the past 13 months. But the nickel is my favorite. (Also close to 80 silver quarters and 80 Roosevelt dimes, about 40 silver nickels, as well.) Your avatar is breathtaking. How'd she get away?
I certainly identify with that moment that 'something doesn't look right' and the delight that follows. Can be life altering, spur some discovery. Sounds like you have a steady stream to interesting coins!! I was shown this coin at an LCS and it really caught my eye. But the price tag was more than I could justify at the time. But it's one that I often think about...and glad I snapped a quick photo when I had it in hand. I checked into it about a year later, and if it were there, I think I would have bought it. But it was gone, and the shop owner wished I had taken it to keep it local to the area. I didn't realize it at the time, but he discounted it quite respectably for me at the time. I only figured that out a year later when looking up similar coins before returning to see if it was still available.
I've had only a few of those moments with coins, and i remember every one, lol. When i find a silver Washington quarter, or Roosevelt dime, I'm always thrilled, but the adrenaline rush i get when i see a Buffalo, or winged liberty, something that REALLY stands out, i can feel my heart quicken... great feeling! I came here to have fun with my daily finds, show off some swag. Then i see what real coins look like, here. Now I'm really hooked. The coin story is heartbreaking. That'd bother me forever. Hope you're not as hard on yourself, as i am on me!
