1871 Indian Head

Redbook says there is a Shallow N and Bold N variant. It looks bold to my untrained eye. Any insight on grade/value is certainly appreciated. Thank you in advance,

G4 in my opinion. Too much wear. Shallow "N" IMO.

 

Value around $50-$60 agree with grade above

 

Red Book shows value of a G-4 1871 Shallow N at $130. Are you saying it's G-4 or less to get to a $50-$60 value?

 

Red book has very high prices i go by ebay sales and that tells a different story.

 

I'm no IHC expert, but that N looks bold to me...?

 

That is a bold N, as for Red Book I would take that with a grain of salt.

 

Always be careful to wait for more than one opinion, some of our members are quick on the answer but not always right.

 

@James Boat Keep in mind that the Red Book and other price guides are just that. Guides. And the Red Book prices are already obsolete when the book comes out. You're better off with the monthly price guides in magazines like Coin World, Coins Magazine, Numismatic News, etc. The Red Book has a wealth of information, but also don't forget that those prices are RETAIL--what you might pay at a LCS, not what a dealer might buy it for.

 

The Red Book has great information but as for prices, it's a guide.

 

This is what most of the Shallow N variety look like after circulation wear brings a coin to a G to VG grading.

I think it might sneak into VG. $80 to $100.

 

G6 at the very least with that much of LIBERTY showing, VG more likely I'd think -- if the damage doesn't detail it.
