I am trying to work on a machine that takes a load of coins, scans it and does pattern analysis, Digital image processing of the scans, matching it with a database and the whole gamut of things that becomes possible because of it.

I am sure the dealers have some way to scan through tons of coins to look for key dates. Before I started with the blue prints I was wondering if something similar to that already exists.

Good theroy, but you would still have to load each coin individually to ensure correct positioning and make sure not to damage the coins. I do wish you luck though.

    Loader

I was thinking about a loader that would load coins into a conveyer belt. About the safe handling of coins, I think that will only be after a few versions later.

Ask Spock, I believe that they developed one in Star Trek #LXVII.

If you're successful, you'll make a ton of money.

Beware of the law of unintended consequences!

Your machine's resource database might very well be coupled with a pantograph-engraver to produce visually undetectable counterfeits.

My father had a device years ago that would allow you to view coins thru a lighted 5x viewfinder, flip the coin , drop the coin, pick up another. It was made of plastic and he sold it to a guy that has now pass away. Send me a PM and I will give you more details on the design.

You could simply copy the system used by the early Egyptians.
Get yourself thousands of slaves, line them up on an assembly line, dump coins at the start and start the system.
Don't forget to get a whip.
OR hire the Chinese and they will not only make thier own type of that with just millions of people. And of course not need to furnish the coins, they will make those too.
I have a difficult time imagining having a machine to sort, grade, turn, photograph and compare with a massive data base. Anything is possible I could see such a machine missing numerouss varieties and error coins. Looking through almost any book on error coins alone indicates the possibilities of massive quantities of varieties and types.

Having a back ground in electro-mechanical devices, particularly ones which are automated to do just what you in vision to do.

You'll need a "programmable vision system", which would control orientation, then categories record the results depending on what its set up to do.

The cost for something like this would be in thousands of dollars maybe even 10's. The capabilities of your vision system will determine your limitations. Also you must engineer everything from the mechanical to the pneumatics, electrical to the controls. A serious task, but more then doable.

    Good luck!

There is nothing like a Mark I eye ball and I am sure this project would not meet half its intended goals in its first version/prototype, but it's a start. With the computing power and digital image processing techniques available these days this goal is achievable but requires a lot of work and a great database of coins.

Or if I give up, I could buy a 1000 slaves, package them in a room, make it look like a big mainframe that takes full kernels of corn for power. You can just pour the coins in :)

They do, they're called collectors. As a general rule dealers DON'T search through large bulk lots. It's not worth their time and effort. Bulk is sold off pretty much unsearched by the dealers. Believe it or not.
