Low ball help

I wondering if anyone can provide some insight in the lowball market. Specifically I have 35 lowball Kennedy halves from the '71-'98. I think 20 of the 35 would straight between PO01 & FR02. Probably have 11 more AG03 and 4 wouldn't straight grade. I paid $0.50 each for these as I pulled them from circulation (only had to look through slightly over 1 million coins to find these). Based on the PCGS population report I have ~12-15 coins that would be the new lowest grade recorded for the date / mintmark. I also have a '71-P Eisenhower that I think is a PO-01 lock. Oddly enough I also pulled a FR-02 1971-D Kennedy that is double headed (magician's trick coin).

My question is this: If somehow you came into possession of this collection, what would you do with it? I mean I could spend them and get the $17.50 back but I don't really need that kind of money. Based on Ebay sales the market for them looks slim. I feel like someone may collect them but I have no idea how to find that person.

Apologies for the rambling post. Was just going through the coins preparing to send a handful off to ANACS for the $10 special and starting thinking about these coins. Any thoughts are appreciated.

No useful information for you, but I'm super interested in following how this pans out.

I have an impression, not very well-informed, that the lowball market is driven by registry competition, which I would think would limit you to NGC or PCGS...

 

I would give them to my Grand kids if I had them or leave to some youngster just starting out . My personal thing .

 

Post two or three on the CU forum BST. You really need great pictures.
Price them high but reasonable. You may have to go the TPG route
to maximize $$$. On the other hand would you pay $35 for a P.001
or Fr.002?

I’d say they are worth 50 cents apiece and prime candidates to be sent back to the government for re-cycling. I have never understood this “low ball” thing. Junk is junk.

Please bear in mind that this stuff is not worth anything until you get it certified. Once it’s in the holder, then you can talk value.

As it is with super high grade modern coins, PCGS controls the supply which has a huge influence upon the prices. If they decide to open the floodgates, the prices will fall.

From what I have seen, the only low ball coins that get "real money" are PCGS certified, unless it's something with a real following, like the 1892 to 1954 U.S. commemative coins. The value is based on getting these coins up on the PCGS registry. Otherwise they are only of passing interest.

 

What is the CU forum? I assume BST is buy / sell /trade.

I absolutely wouldn’t pay $35 for a P.001. I only have them because I keep just about everything interesting when coin roll hunting. I have 1000’s of NIFC’s, 1000’s of BU coins, many 100’s of proofs, holed coins, stamped coins, foreign coins, etc....

For that date range and condition, spend the 20 lesser grade and pass down the better grades...I believe silver content stopped with 1970 Kennedys, and clad dates afterward really need to be AU58 or better for them to have collector interest...they are good for filling holes in albums until you find better ones which is not hard to do...imo...Spark

A post like this is much better with a few pictures of what you are talking about. There are collectors of everything. One man's junk is another's treasure. If your coins are truly worn out with no damage, they are worth a premium, sometimes a big premium. Put them on eBay, one per sale, and you will see. By the way, I collect holed coins by date and mint mark and enjoy them very much.

 

If you collect holes Kennedy’s by date and mintmark I have several hundred. Let me know what dates / mintmarks you’re looking for and they’re your. I pull them from circulation but don’t collect them, if that makes sense.

You want to send them to PCGS, save you money on ANACS as modern lowballs won't do well in those holders. At the very least NGC

As for the 4 that won't straight grade, those are no longer lowballs just details coins just spend those

 

Go out and check the PCGS and NGC registries. If there is a low-ball Kennedy set listed, then there's interest and you might make a few bucks.

 

I looked at some of the lowball collections listed in the PCGS Set Registry. Most of the collections, other than the highest ranking (best of the worst) contain coins that aren't lowball at all, coins in AU or MS. It's just another way that PCGS discovered to make money and grade more coins. That's just my opinion, of course, and if you like the lowball idea, more power to you!

 

It's absolutely a next money-making fad and scheme. Until the "graders" began their set $ game lowball was an eccentric-collectors, poor budget minded and kooky past time and unheard of...spoken only in whispers and dark alleys where no one would admit to such foolishness. Now you find certified culls asking hundreds of dollars on online auction sites ripe for stupifying exploitation of cr*p.
