People have criticized every coin design they've ever come out with including the classics people love today. I'm kind of surprised somebody would have this strong of feelings over it. I'm curious, what do you think the designs should have been? I think the $10 gold design is really nice. The silver ones just look like modern commemoratives.
I wish the U.S. silver was a coin, like Britain did. In that case, I would be a buyer. I cannot explain on a logical level why it makes a difference to me - it just does, and I'm not even going to try to defend it. Just something different to me between coin of the realm and the Franklin mint. I actually like the designs, and the commemoration itself, but I'm going to pass.
For a more uneventful commemoration I could understand the logic but being the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower is pretty cool. They haven't put out a coin in 100 years for it. I wouldn't let the medal aspect bother you, especially if you like it. To me I look at it as what's the purpose of collecting anything? It's a one ounce round of silver with a design on it commemorating an event, produced by the same government facility on the same machines as if it was a congressionally approved coin, minus some of the text cluttering the coin. It will be stored in the same location as if it was a coin. It's a relatively small investment if you're even able to get one. These mintages are way too low IMO.
I hear ya. That's all nice and logical. Somehow it's not about logic to me. Maybe I'm afraid that if I start chasing medals down the rabbit hole, I'll find myself coming out the other end plum in the middle of the land of "limited edition" late-night-TV gold-plated "commemoratives."
Did anyone here receive this offer from Heritage? “The British Royal Mint is producing a series of gold and silver coins, to honor the day that the Mayflower first set sale. While the silver and half ounce gold coins will be available to the general public, Heritage Auctions, being an official distributor of the British Royal Mint, has acquired the exclusive rights to the entire mintage of 500 one ounce gold coins.” Initial offer, $2950 for PR69 and $3950 for PR70, with a low mintage of 500 are these expected to be in demand and a good investment? (Posted this in World coins with no response, so figured maybe this is a better thread..)
No, I did not receive this offer, but I **think** it is quite deceitful. US Mint is offering 4850 two-coin sets which INCLUDE this very coin. US Mint also says total mintage is 5350, which I think explains the 500 coins that British Royal Mint is offering through Heritage. Assuming all of that is true, and I may be missing something, then that claim of "Total Mintage of 500" seems deceitful to me. YMMV.
To paraphrase Will Rogers, good investments are ones that go up. If they don't go up, don't buy them.
To clarify I left out some important details. The joint coins being offered by the US Mint are a $10 coin and a £25 coin, both a quarter of an ounce with a higher mintage as you noted. This HA offering has the same images but it’s actually a different weight and denomination- £100 and a full of ounce of gold. So it’s possible that the 500 mintage is not a misrepresentation.
My question is on the gold reverse proof. It says 5,000 mintage under the product number then at the end of the description it says these will be limited to a mintage of 10,000. So which is it? It's not offered in any other product offering. I've called twice and never got through so I sent an e-mail. Waiting their response. Maybe nobody there on Veteran's day.
You can actually already buy one on the secondary market https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/so..._ucam_gold_1oz_mayflower/1379199/Default.aspx
Interesting find, I don't recall reading about this 1 oz coin before. You may be correct about the 500 mintage. I discovered you can go to the NGC Verification page and enter 6039445-xxx where xxx is a number below 400 and view many of the slabs. Enter 70 for the grade.
You can buy everything on the secondary market including before it's even been sold with preorders so it's no surprise to see something being sold that's already been sold
Wow, that took 3 minutes to get everything. I wonder if people think this starts at noon? Or maybe no one wants these lol
Everything is still available 20 minutes in. Not the feeding frenzy of the V75 eagles. I also didn't get any pre-sale buy offers.
At 30 minutes in, only the Gold set and the single silver medal are still available. The gold reverse proof is sold out, as is the silver set. I do think the 9 am start time played some small part in this. People just don't pay attention to minor details like that, LOL. And maybe no one really wants these. Who knows
