Yea most Roman emperors had up to several dozen disrinct reverse types. Add in provincial and you can sometimes get into three figures just in reverses.

add that to different obverse pairings and you’ve got a heck of a job getting them all

Just, Please, @Everett Guy, Please, don't bother with copies! Far better to get something real, in, um, correspondingly crappy condition. Only especially if it's of someone who you can even aspire to get a better example of. It will be there to remind you....

If you hang around here with any regularity, you'll notice we call the denarii and antoniniani of Gordian III "roaches" because they are as abundant as cockroaches. Here's a couple more:

As far as copys...I was thinking of the ones they got in museums that would be next to impossible of getting but now I see there is enough different coins to last me a life time to collect...I dont have time to think about the ones I cant get...lol

...Honest, when it comes to anything this long term, don't minor details like, I dunno, grandchildren kind of take precedence? It helps to chill a little.

The only “copy” I would consider is a Paduan or Becker piece, since they’re historical in their own right

All true, but that would derail the whole point of collecting for the immediate historical context.

I agree. For the most part, I would only really want originals. However, if faced with an impossible Saturninus and I REALLY wanted something, a $10 copy would appease the itch

There are a couple Probus coins that will sell for $1000 and others that stay in the $10 to $50 depending on condition. This is one of the high end coins but the chances of you seeing one is slim.

The link below show the ones listed on Wildwinds. They are rarely complete down to minor variations but have most of the major types.

We tell people who more over from modern coins to get over the idea of having a 'complete' set and to buy coins that you like. Do NOT buy coins because I tell you to and especially do not buy coins a dealer tells you that you must unless you understand why you need that one.

I found this list of animal species on earth:
    Animals: estimated 3-30 million species
    |
    |--Invertebrates: 97% of all known species
    | |--Sponges: 10,000 species
    | |--Cnidarians: 8,000-9,000 species
    | |--Mollusks: 100,000 species
    | |--Platyhelminths: 13,000 species
    | |--Nematodes: 20,000+ species
    | |--Echinoderms: 6,000 species
    | |--Annelida: 12,000 species
    | |--Arthropods
    | |--Crustaceans: 40,000 species
    | |--Insects: 1-30 million+ species
    | |--Arachnids: 75,500 species
    |
    |--Vertebrates: 3% of all known species
    |--Reptiles: 7,984 species
    |--Amphibians: 5,400 species
    |--Birds: 9,000-10,000 species
    |--Mammals: 4,475-5,000 species
    |--Ray-Finned Fishes: 23,500 species

I'd guess that the number of coin types that exist is similar to this number AND just like the animals few of us will see or care to see 90% of what exists. Also like the animals, there are types of coins that once existed but none have survived until now. Of course someone could be digging somewhere and find one that was previously unknown. For that matter, they might find thousands of something making a rarity common. Ancient coins have many more rare or unknown types than modern coins made since record keeping became common. I always liked the guess of a million different ancient coins which matches the low estimate on the animal list for insects. When it comes down to facts, the difference between 1 million and 30 million means noting to me since I don't have time left to count them let alone collect them.

I have it on good authority that there are more stars than coins.
