Is Ebay a major market place for coin buyers in Europe like it is here in the USA. I'm referring to the national Ebay in each country, not necessarily American Ebay. I occasionally buy on Italian Ebay but is that where Italian coin buyers prefer to go ?? And is German Ebay the place that German coin buyers go to ? And French Ebay, Dutch Ebay, British Ebay, etc.
I know a number of people of various nationalities who mainly use their countries version. It is already geared up for use in their native language so instructions, guidelines and rules etc. don't require page translation etc. On the other side if they are looking for or selling something that is more specific to a country they log on there.
Is there any other major online marketplace in the European countries that resembles Ebay's auction format for coin purchases. I'll be specific.....if an Italian coin buyer in Italy is looking for say a 1735 Sicilian 12 Tari coin minted in Palermo, would he look at Italian Ebay for a good buy or is there another online place that would be better ?
The couple of Italians I know use e-bay or Amazon, the same here in Spain with also Milanuncia which is a large selling portal. Also you could sign up as a member of Numista, they have a lot of multinational members who all have coins for sale, swapping etc. It is also one of the most comprehensive info sites around https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces96483.html
I rarely buy coins on eBay but if I put a search in for a specific coin it gives me the option to view coins from international sellers from all over the world. If I'm selling coins on eBay.uk I can check a box for International site visibility. Also offering international shipping allows it to be visible worldwide except for the countries I don't ship to.
My Germany friends actually peruse US ebay more than Germany. But I personally found some great US coins on German ebay while there. There is a lot being sold there and it's worth the look from time to time.
German here. eBay DE is better in terms of variety for german coins than eBay US. The same goes for Italy and Spain for its corresponding national coins. I assume this is the norm because more people collect or focus in the national coinage. It’s the same if I visit a coin shop in Italy I probably will be looking for Italian coins. Sometimes eBay US has better prices, but the shipping cost ruins it. Yes, there are other popular sites here, “MA shops” for example. But I find eBay prices to be better. edit: typo
Certainly here in the UK, most coin sales are through Ebay.co.uk - unless they are good enough to go to one of the top auction houses. A tip - often you can get much better deals for coins "out of country" - so US coins are invariably much cheaper on the UK site than on the Ebay.com - even allowing for postage. Bear in mind that in the UK grading and encapsulating coins is far less popular, so excellent coins can be found in the raw.
For specific countries, other sites may be more frequently used. For example, I've had great luck with Tradera (Sweden), Ricardo (Switzerland), and MA-Shops (Germany) for finding items that were virtually nonexistent on Ebay.
Although I am based in the UK I always have the option turned on to look at International sellers - as I am a collector of world coins most of the things I buy are from overseas.
Yep, mostly coins. As far as payment, it really depends on the individual seller. For example, with Tradera, some sellers accept Paypal, while others require payment via bank transfer. Same with Ricardo. I've actually gotten around that issue by using Transferwise, which helps cut down on currency conversion fees.
I have used Transferwise as well, but understand that if they don't use PayPal, there's no buyer's protection. Also, you can use paypal for foreign transactions and tell paypal to let your credit card company convert the funds. Assuming you have no foreign transaction fees, you will always pay less converting it with your credit card instead of PayPal. Just like you should always pay in whatever the local currency is when traveling.
Not sure about everyone on MA-shops accepting PayPal, but the several sellers there that I have ordered from all did. So would guess that at least a fair number accept PayPal. When you are viewing a seller's item, the payment methods will be clearly visible, just below item price, so you will know right away what your options are.
