Yes, a coin show is happening

I am a part-time dealer at a local coin show in Indianapolis. I consider myself a collector first but that is irrelevant for this thread.

The gentleman that runs the show just sent out the message below. I have mixed feelings although I plan on attending. I will be wearing a mask and gloves. For the most part, I feel this is a good thing. This is a relatively small monthly show that typically has 30+ dealers spread out over about 50 tables.

Many of these dealers do shows as there sole source of income in addition to any Social Security or pensions that they may receive. To them, it could be crucial to get some cash flowing.

I know many people think it is too early for shows and I understand and have many of the same concerns.

If you are in the area and you feel safe and comfortable enough to do so, please attend.

Dear Dealers,
As of right now the Knights of Columbus (Northside Events Club) states that we CAN have the Coin Show on June 14th. There will be some changes:
1. There will NOT be a breakfast buffet in the morning. No Donuts will be served either.
2. There will NOT be any coffee or water at the front doors.
3. Masks are not required, but strongly suggested. Gloves are optional too. (Same for Customers)
4. Hand-Sanitation Stations will be set up in bathrooms and at the front entrances.
a. Recommended that you bring hand sanitizer for yourself and/or offer to Customers at your table too. Shows you care.
5. We will be limiting the number of Customers to 1 per each 6 foot table (One Chair will be put in front of each 6’ table instead of 2). Couples and family units can share the same space.
Signs will be posted stating as such too.
6. I ask that you clean your cases often. So bring glass cleaner or Clorox Wipes.
7. Based on the Marion County restrictions at that time we may have to regulate the number of people in and out of the show at the door. If all goes according to plan it should be
150 or more by June 14th. That is about max we have at any one time in the room anyways.
8. The Bar will be open for lunch, but will be carry out only. So you can bring it back to your table.
9. This will be new for all of us, so I ask that you bring your patience too. Let’s make it the most comfortable, safe, and fun environment we can for everyone.
10. I do not know how many Customers will attend, but all the advertising has been put in place for this show. It would help if you could contact as many of your customers as you can and let them know that the Show Is On and that you will be there. This will help everyone!

Sitting at a table all day facing strangers who mostly won't even wear masks? Sign me right up!

Oh, and bonus points for asking dealers to use a chlorinated cleaning product on their displays. Wow.

Edit: Whoops. Clorox-brand disinfecting wipes AREN'T "a chlorinated cleaning product". No sodium hypochlorite, no free chlorine. I still wouldn't get them directly on coins, but they aren't going to produce corrosive fumes. As you were.

 

Or window cleaner because ya know... Windex cures everything. I saw that in a movie once.

 

Yeah, if not everyone is wearing a mask, and they're indoors and within 6 feet of each other... then there's no point. To steal (and modify) a quote from Robin Williams: "Partial mask-wearing is like partial circumcision. You either go all the way, or ***** forget it."

 

Okay, that's not an analogy I would've gone to.

 

Yet it is 100% appropriate.

 

Why is it that you people are so concerned whether people wear a mask or not?
If you don't want to go, fine. Stop attacking people for the choices they make- you have no idea why someone isn't wearing a mask: maybe they have asthma, as many people do (including myself). Personally, I'm not onboard with forced mask wearing. Yes, there definitely should be a limit on how many individuals can enter the premises (which as appears, there is), but you cannot force someone into doing something i.e wearing PPE.

 

Of course you can’t force someone... but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t wear a mask out of courtesy.

Not wearing a mask, assuming you have no limiting health condition, puts all other show attendees at risk. Freedom of choice ends whenever someone else is unwillingly endangered IMO. Also may I add that its plain selfish and irresponsible not to wear one?

 

If I was in the area, I wouldn't attend! Every coin show I've ever been to were old coots just like myself. Masks not required but strongly suggested is a complete turn off for me!

 

Wear a scarlet T = I tested negative for Covid19 and you don't have to wear a mask?

 

@Chris B Can you give us an update when this show occurs on how the coin market is? What was hot/whats not hot, etc?

 

You tested negative but then were infected by an asymptomatic jerk who decided he was too special to wear a mask. The whole thing falls apart because of a single person who believes they are more important than everyone else.
Bottom line. Wear a mask, follow social distancing guidelines, don’t be a dick towards your fellow man.

There will be people that won't think it's "time" for a coin show or anything else a year from now and possibly longer. And of course there are those on the other end that haven't changed the way they do things would go anyplace they want even if there was a known source of infection.

The gentleman that runs this show was faced with a decision that I am glad that I didn't have to make. He has a family to feed and coin shows is his income source. He is a "full" time dealer without a brick and mortar business. Even if he had one it wouldn't have been open until today. The last thing he wants is to do this and there be cases of infections tied back to his show. That won't be good for him or anyone else.

Someone has to be first and I'm sure other shows will be keeping an eye on this to see how it goes.

I can certainly do that. My thought is that there will be a pretty light turnout. I hope that people most at risk stay home, of course, that will help generate the light turnout.

This is a personal choice for me and anyone else that attends. I am going to take all necessary precautions to protect myself and the ones I love. Come if you want to and if you don't think its safe STAY HOME just like any other activity.

 

I will be attending as a customer. Yes I will wear a mask and I will use hand sanitizer frequently.

 

Not trying to be a jerk but to be that guy this did make me laugh like it's so easy to get clorox wipes and was mentioned so casually

 

If you want to run a business you have to have the supplies you need. I have Clorox wipes at my office to wipe down the front desk and such. They are hard to find...but if you want to be open you gotta find them. That’s part of the deal.

 

Not really, no one should be paying the gouging prices that have happened for them and they're essentially impossible to even be allowed to order unless you are in a specific field.

Going to the store to get them basically defeats the purpose which just shows how stupid everything is

So yea saying you need Clorox wipes I'd crack up laughing and whether or not I could find wipes is not what would determine if my business is open or not. There are plenty of other ways to clean without wipes and there is no deal.

 

There are other ways to clean. But your clients have to have faith in you. If they don’t think things are clean then they aren’t clean. That is the deal. I don’t like it either. I paid over $100 recently for hand sanitizer. If I don’t have it on my counter patients don’t come in and I lose thousands a day.

I don’t like it either but that’s the world right now. As a business owner...you either accept it and find a way to make it work...or you don’t work.
