Thank you for reply. Here are some additional photos of #55 to hopefully provide for better detail of the areas in question: Thank You.
These latest photos clear up any remaining doubts -- this is an elliptical clip. The unstruck edges on either side of the short axis of the ellipse show the rough edge of a blank. The blank wasn't upset here because the length of the short axis wasn't great enough to permit the blank to be squeezed by the upset mill. Furthermore, the coin was struck fully within the collar, with neither side of the short axis in contact with the collar.
Thank you very much for your prompt reply on this @mikediamond I am still curious about #53 having a straight clip as indicated in a post above. If you can speak to that point point, I would be very appreciative. Thank you again.
Thanks, not really necessary as I did not state what I thought Steve's #55 coin was. I was still trying to figure out the options with your help. Thank You.
I wonder if the straight edge of the restruck area could be caused by the design in that area using the metal to fill the design and not allowing it to spread out in a circular pattern. With a clipped planchet one would expect the weight to be less than normal and not higher.
#53 is a saddle strike on a previously-struck cent (a "saddle/triple strike"). The larger of the two off-center strikes has a chain-struck edge, not a straight clip.
@mikediamond Thank you for your reply. Based on your evaluation and the photos I have provided, could you provide an estimated value for #53?
I suspect it would bring between $40 and $50 on eBay. That's mainly because the smaller off-center strike is so tiny.
@mikediamond Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your estimated value and understand your rationale. With your help and the help of all those who replied throughout this thread, I feel that we have investigated these errors quite thoroughly. I will be posting a new thread with another lot of errors soon. I welcome everyone to view/reply to that thread. If anyone has any other comments regarding this thread, feel free to reply. Thank You.
