What happened to this 1873 nickel?

    The surface looks terrible; not sure the cause - old lacquer?

    But, the lack of letters on the obverse is strange. A die failure? Tampering?

    Your thoughts?

    Sometimes it's "struck through grease".

    Thanks, I just looked at an example on the NGC site, and that certainly fits the bill. The Washington quarter shown was just a ghost image.
