Thanks to an idea from @physics-fan3.14 we have the newest game thread.

A coin will be posted and everyone can provide an opinion of whether the coin deserves a CAC sticker or does not deserve one.

    The basic rules:
    1. Post a PCGS or NGC coin with a CAC sticker.
    2. Everyone will have around 24 hours to give an opinion (can be extended if there is low participation).
    3. Majority opinion will decide that coin.
    4. Please comment if you want to post next.

-there won’t really be a scoring system...just a count of what happened (how many were deserving/not deserving).
-Note: we can include both green and gold CAC stickers...for gold stickers, we can comment on if the coin should be gold, only green, or no sticker at all
    ------
It has been generally considered that a green CAC sticker implies a coin is A or B for the assigned grade. A gold CAC is claimed to be a coin that would green sticker at the next grade (so an MS 65 gold would still get a green as an MS 66). Some say that the coin needs to be close to two points under-graded to get the gold (this has not been confirmed though by CAC).

As a point of reference, the CAC website explains that....
    THE CAC STICKER MEANS:

    • Verified. Your coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade.

    • Guaranteed. CAC stands behind our verification by making markets in most actively traded coins.

    And
"For many years, coin dealers and advanced collectors have used the letters A, B, and C among themselves to further describe coins. C indicates low-end for the grade, B indicates solid for the grade, and A indicates high-end. CAC will only award stickers to coins in the A or B category. C coins, although accurately graded, will be returned without a CAC sticker"

First up is this 1921 Morgan graded MS 65. Is the green CAC sticker deserved or not?

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

    Thanks for posting the thread!

Great first example. I've got a killer to go second, when this is done.

And, I'll say - no CAC on that! CAC should be a premium 65, and that looks to be a borderline 64!

    Off to a great start!

Sounds fun. I'll play but I have to say something.
We will actually be judging the quality of the images. Saying that CAC got it wrong from an image is like judging a bottle of wine before you taste it.

I'll say yes on the CAC.

    Haha, @green18 , it's all good.

I'm curious to hear what people's opinion is on the 1921 DD posted!

Old 'rattler', quite deserving of the grade and the assurance. The lack of distracting 'chatter' almost makes me think this one could have maybe graded higher........

Fun thread idea. I think that coins that don’t have a CAC should be included and see if they are deserving of a CAC sticker. I think this will open the thread up more for discussion on said coins if they were under graded or quite solid for the grade. Just a thought. Much like the star thread is for coins with and without and those on the forum give their opinion if it “should” have star or not.

I don’t think this one should have CAC. To me the luster seems someone muted for a gem state and also seems to have a bit more contact marks than a premium 65.

Did you ever drink that scotch I got ya?!

This whole forum is bloody fun. It’s what keeps me intrigued. The star or no star is a year old thread with 32 pages. I think it’s success should be mimicked here. Mostly because I need to know if some coins I own would CAC or not. :woot: It’s better than me paying for the service. I trust the members here as much. :cigar:

That's just the picture style from GC.

Agreed. Guessing whether or not it has a CAC would be more meaningful. Trying to argue against a CAC coin from a single picture is a fool's errand.

I say yes. No huge marks. A typical mediocre strike typical of the issue and nice original skin say bean all the way

Nope. Still have it unopened. Until I can find a larger vessel available, your gift will remain unopened. If I ever do, though, yours will still remain unopened.

An idea that was suggested to me is to hide the cert number and just show the coin with the grade. That way we won't know the status until after everyone votes.

Does everyone think this would be better?

Yes. Does that means coins without a CAC sticker can be posted to see if members think it should or shouldn’t have a sticker?

Sure that can be done too.

    We'll have the following breakdowns:

Green CAC on coin and deserves it:
Green CAC on coin and doesn't deserve it:
Gold CAC on coin and deserves it:
Gold CAC on coin but should only be Green:
Gold CAC on coin but should not sticker:
Failed to sticker but deserves a sticker:
Failed to sticker and should not sticker:
Unknown sticker status and deserves a sticker:
Unknown sticker status and does not deserve a sticker:

    Did I cover everything? :D

Yeah, and I thought this might be better although it requires cropping the CAC sticker (if any) and the label before posting. But it's easier IMO.

BTW, anybody got any numbers on the ratio of Green to Gold CAC stickers out there ? I'll bet it's close to 10:1 ?
