What grade would you assign to this coin. I know grading from a photo, and not the best at that, is difficult, but a ball park grade is fine. Here are a couple of shots with the background removed.
Most importantly, it looks to be clearly FH. The actual grade of the coin..... very hard to determine from those pictures. Somewhere between 58-65
I feel the same. I see a lack of detail in the drapery just below the waist, and a funny black thingy near Liberty’s foot. Yet the head strike seems clear and detailed. The rivets seem untouched and undistorted by any handling. Plus, I seem to see odd grades for the SLQ’s - presumably the TPGs see something I don’t. Either AU55 or MS63.
I'm thinking 63. But I admit some of the same issues others are having. Head and rivets and shield are strong. Fields look good and feathers showing detail/outlines. Rims look very good. One black mark. A very nice specimen!! Enjoy that coin!!
I'm sure the image doesn't help. I would have to it in person to take a shot at the grade Full Head Nice rivets Nice Shield
AU-58 FH. The Type 1s are usually well-struck and I find the feathers on the eagle's breast to be weaker than they should be. Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like there are luster breaks on the eagle as well. While the head, shield and rivets look strong, I think I see luster breaks on Liberty's knees and thighs.
Thanks to all of you for your input. When I bought this coin, I too thought it should have been AU/MS FH but PCGS had other ideas. I honestly couldn't see evidence of a cleaning, but then I'm no expert. I basically got it because I thought it was nice example, cleaned or not, and with a FH. Thoughts on breaking it out and submitting it again?
