The pictiure should provide a good image of the circular scaring and smoothing that can occur when coins are put into these machines.
Hey! That looks like all the nickels in my collection - except I don't have any s-mintmarks!!! Instead of FS (Full Steps), it's MOAFD - Monticello On A Foggy Day But seriously, that isn't "normal" damage, is it? Did it get stuck or something?
i see lots of coins like that. that damage occurs when that coin is on the end of the roll. when the machine goes to make it crimpled, it scrapes the coin. i wonder how many old coins have been ruined by this? i have some wheaties with the same damage.
No, my friend. I wouldn't consider it "normal" damage. "Normal" damage is just good old honest wear and tear. There's nothing "normal" about the damage caused by a wrapping machine. I can't comment about whether, or not, you got "stuck" I don't know enough about the coins you bought, or about the prices you paid for them. Hopefully, as long as you're happy, then that's the main thing. :thumb:
Hey all, another style of counting machine marks you may run into, especially on older coins are the small pin wheel or small swirl marks that will be seen fairly centered on either side of the coin... Here are couple photos to illustrate. Just an FYI...
Isn't there a mint error though that looks somewhat similar to this damage liike incorrect die punch?
First, welcome to the forum. To answer your question, no if you see marks like the coins pictured it is just damage as described.
