So I heard everyone all over the place tell about the way they clean and why it is the best. Along with all the sponsership info. I want to hear it from you people. What is the best way to clean? I am talking general dirt/grime cleaning, nothing deep or that will leaving scarring.
Cleaning and coins (IMO) probably shouldn't be used in the same sentence, unless you really know what you're doing. At the most, I have acetone'd lightly with saturated Q-Tips. Lightly Verdi-cared some coins. Dipped a few Kennedy's for a second, which really brought back major luster. I usually rinse with distilled water. If you're a novice maybe warm water and liquid soap at the most. Good luck.
Soak in distilled water to remove water-soluble dirt/grime. Soak in acetone or xylene to remove organic gunk. None of the above will chemically interact with the metal in your coins, so no risk of damage. MS70 (dilluted with distilled water) is good for removing haze from proof coins, but not much else. Verdi-Care is good for removing verdigris from copper and bronze coins. Don't polish coins. Don't rub them with you finger, a cloth, a Q-tip or a pencil eraser. Not sure what you mean by "sponsership [sic] info".
Every coin is a different deal. Post images of the coin you feel needs help. It's best to learn before you do anything.
My answer would be NO if you're attempting to do this yourself. You could risk damaging the coin and reducing its value. I don't clean any of mine...However, If you're metal detecting and the coin is caked with dirt, a bath in water with mild soap.
